SAPPA Music Workshops helps kids and teens ages 7 to 18, discover the joy of music. Our classes are designed for each age group and follow California Public Schools’ music education standards. Students learn to play instruments, appreciate various genres, and build confidence. In our weekly group classes, we explore melody, rhythm, harmony, tempo, dynamics, expression, and music reading, writing and performance. We also offer fun keyboard and guitar classes that teach basic music theory and music skills. Through the Watts-Willowbrook Music Academy, students learn symphonic string instruments, music theory and experience the joy of playing in a complete orchestra. Practice is an important part of learning music, so students are required to have their own instrument at home. We provide a monthly practice calendar along with online programs to help students stay on track and celebrate their progress. Our instructors are passionate and love teaching, so we have created a welcoming, supportive space where students can have fun, try new things, and grow as young musicians.
Piano
Beginning piano students learn the basics of finger placement, note reading, and simple songs. As they grow, students move on to new exercises, fun songs, and more challenging skills. Each level builds confidence, creativity, and a strong foundation in piano.
Guitar
Guitar students learn basic playing techniques, tuning, chords, and scales. Students also practice reading music and performing songs. Lessons explore many styles, including pop, classical, folk, blues, rock, and jazz. No previous guitar experience is required.
Symphonic Strings
The Watts-Willowbrook Conservatory offers tuition-free music instruction for young people in the South LA and Watts/Compton areas. The program helps more minority students take part in classical music and gives them opportunities to perform, compete, and earn scholarships. Classes are offered in person and online, with instruction in violin, viola, cello, and string bass.
